Beta Gamma Chi envisions a community where LGBTQ+ youth have the resources, development, and mentorship they need to live openly, freely, and safely.
So many of us have experienced discrimination, harassment, and neglect as adolescents. Our schooling has taught us that schools can be breeding grounds for bullying and disenfranchisement, as school culture systems fail to maintain safe spaces for all students, and district-wide policies fail to protect our most at-risk youth.
We envision more community centers that actively meet the needs of queer youth.
We envision more K-12 schools with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion practitioners who develop, facilitate, and monitor school-based programs and curricula that promote identity and community development.
We envision more college campuses that not only actively recruit and retain queer students and faculty but form DEI task forces that work to design and implement policies that protect and invest in queer students.
Ambitious? Yes. But we believe our members and the organizations within our network can build the capacity to achieve such a bold, innovative, and unapologetic reality. In addition to outlining our financial and membership growth, our strategic plan, Imagine2024, is our blueprint for bringing this vision to fruition.
Our experience in community service has helped us realize our potential impact. We believe that we can increase our reach by changing how we serve. Rather than being dependent on volunteering, we have made community engagement our focus. Community engagement is the process we take to work with members of the LGBTQ+ community. This process includes identifying needs or issues affecting the well-being of queer people and addressing those needs through programming, membership, and other resources we can responsibly provide.
This is ambitious work, but we are getting it done. Here’s how:
We have a proven track record of fundraising for philanthropic causes.
We have found success in facilitating local community events.
We are building new strategic partnerships with LGBTQ+ centers that serve youth.
We don't just talk about diversity and inclusion; we put it into practice. We are the only organization within our network that has published a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion guide with protections for our transgender, genderqueer, and non-binary members.
Let us tell you about our sibling, Ronald (they/them), from Dayton, Ohio. In 2018, Ronald’s boyfriend of six years broke up with them, and just weeks later, a close family member passed. As any of us would be, Ronald was distraught and overcome with grief and sadness. Our members began to shower Ronald with an outpouring of love, kindness, space, and support. This level of support manifested in phone calls, visits from out-of-state, care packages, and kiki sessions when needed. Ronald’s response? "I love my Beta! Y'all were there when I didn't even know I had an army behind me."
Our Core Beliefs
We root our work in core beliefs, which our members refer to as pillars.
We believe in the right to a chosen family. Too many of us have experienced rejection from family members and have relied on friendships and romantic relationships to fill that void. Our brotherhood consists of chosen parents and siblings, in addition to mentors. We provide a safe, loyal, and consistent community to anyone courageous and vulnerable enough to open their hearts to us. Our bond is more profound than friendship. We are a family of siblings whose lives are forever interconnected and interwoven in a deep belief of love and selflessness that is difficult to capture in words. We show up for everyone—every time.
We believe that every member of the LGBTQ+ community should receive the support they need to thrive and survive in a heteronormative world. And that is why we are continually thinking of ways to support our members in their personal and professional growth and development. See, Beta Gamma Chi is a small organization, but we pack a powerful punch. We provide support through committees, fellowships, conference sponsorships, and ambassadorships.
We believe that every member of the LGBTQ+ community should have access to safe spaces that allow them to affirm and accept their identity. For some of us, walking in our truth is difficult, and quite frankly, it’s a journey filled with tough experiences, hard lessons, and frequent pitfalls. We recognize that self-acceptance is a practice, so we intentionally embed it in everything we do. We provide a safe space for our members to be their authentic selves, flaws, and all.
We believe that all political, legal, and social barriers must be removed for LGBTQ+ people to experience equity. We use our platform and our voices to promote organizations, advocates, and campaigns that actively work to eliminate those barriers. We believe that by spreading awareness and promoting progressive ideals, we will achieve success.
Our mission has driven our work and inspired our programs for over a decade. We strive to
enhance the quality of life for queer people through service programming
uplift, educate, empower, love, and serve the LGBTQ community
promote the positive welfare of queer people on college campuses
bond together and collaborate with LGBTQ service organizations in the best interest of the brotherhood
hold fast to the vision of brotherhood while uncovering success with each step
