We are deeply saddened and heartbroken by the loss of 14-year-old Giovanni Melton. Melton, a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community at Coronado High School in Henderson, NV, was murdered by his father on Thursday. Although he had only been a member of the school community for a few short months, his peers and teachers described him as selfless, loving, and someone who could make anyone laugh.
As our community mourns the loss of Giovanni, we call on all members of the queer community to serve and continue supporting our most vulnerable youth. For far too long, queer youth have been targeted—at school, in the community, and often at home—for their sexual orientation and gender identity. Our brotherhood is committed to developing more programs and resources to protect and empower LGBTQ+ youth around the country, now more than ever. Our thoughts and prayers are with Giovanni’s loved ones.
